Aadhaar Pan link deadline expires today, here is what you need to know before linking two

Today is the last day to link PAN card with Aadhaar number. But is it?

Today is the last day to link PAN card with Aadhaar number. But is it? This is a simple question but with an answer that is incredibly complex because there is no definite answer. The government will like you to believe that today is the last day to link your PAN card with Aadhaar number. And probably that is accurate too. But from the government itself there are indications that it might be bluffing. Sounds strange but then everything about Aadhaar is strange.

However, before we deal with the question of deadline, let’s figure out how you can link the PAN card with Aadhaar, in case you have decided to do so. The process is simple, although there could be some potential issues.

There are several ways to link Aadhaar with PAN card. One is SMS way, then the online way and potentially there is a third way that is through banks.

Here is what you need to do:

Use SMS: To link your Aadhaar number to PAN card using SMS, type UIDPAN<SPACE><12 digit Aadhaar><Space><10 digit PAN> and send it to 567678 or 56161.

You will soon get a confirmation that your Aadhaar has been linked with the PAN card.

Use Income Tax website: Visit the link http://www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in and enter your PAN card number, Aadhaar Number, your name on Aadhaar followed by a captcha code. Click on the Link Aadhaar button at the below and your cards are linked.

You will get an SMS telling you that Aadhaar has been linked.

The bank way: You can go to the bank and link your Aadhaar number with the PAN card as well as your bank account.

Now, potentially there might be some issues too. If the date of birth or name in your PAN card data doesn’t match the data in Aadhaar, the linking won’t happen. In this case you will have to request the government to correct your data, and that will take time. Also, depending on where you have the data wrong, you will have to follow a different procedure.

Now coming back to the question of deadline, if it is today or not and is it mandatory to link Aadhaar with PAN or not, there are no clear answers. Currently, here is how the situation stands:

— The Income Tax department has clearly said that the PAN card and the Aadhaar number needs to be linked and it needs to be linked by August 31. But at the same time, there is no clarity on what happens if your Aadhaar number is not linked with PAN card. Will a non-linked PAN card be invalidated? Initially, the answer seemed to be yes but since then there have also been reports that the PAN card will not be invalidated.

The only thing that you won’t be able to do without linking PAN card and Aadhaar number is that you won’t be able to pay tax. In fact if you have filed the income tax this year after July, chances are that your Aadhaar number is already linked with your PAN card.

— To make the whole thing confusing, there is the statement of Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in Lok Sabha. Answering a question, he said there is no dedaline to link Aadhaar card with PAN numbers. Jaitley on August 11 informed the Lok Sabha that the government has not fixed any time-frame to complete the linking of Aadhaar with PAN. This was in response to a query put forward by Ram Charitra Nishad who had categorically asked whether there’s any fixed time-frame to complete the linking of Aadhaar with PAN, and if yes, he had asked for further details and the steps taken by the government in this regard.

“No Madam,” Jaitley said while replying to the query.

However, it is possible that he might be talking about deadline for government to link the PAN card database with Aadhaar database and not the deadline for citizens of the country. The two things are separate, even if they seemingly look the same.

— Finally, the government has a habit of extending deadlines when it comes to Aadhaar. Just yesterday, the government told Supreme Court that it is extending deadline to make Aadhaar mandatory for all welfare services from September 30 to December 31 and that there was no need to hear the pending Aadhaar case on urgent basis. But in that extension, linking of Aadhaar with PAN is not included. For that the deadline seemingly remains August 31.

It is possibly that by evening or tomorrow the deadline to link PAN card with Aadhaar number too changes.
