ANCHOR AND PURPOSE

The journey of life is never an easy one for most of us. From birth to death, life is ever challenging us, pushing us on the back foot, squeezing us into submission, and never letting us know what lies in store for us, at the next corner. Life can be harsh, unpredictable, lonely, insecure, and fearful. The mere act of living life on earth, is a stressful one.

As human beings, we are born on earth without really knowing why we are born, what is our purpose here on earth, and what happens to us when we exit this planet. We really dont know whether what we do here matters, or does not matter, in the long run. We are literally thrown into a stormy ocean, with no boat, no compass, and with a family, whose members themseves are struggling to make sense and navigate these waters.

Under such circumstances, how does one go about one’s life? How does one continue to live fruitfully and happily? Where does one find inspiration to carry on, day after day, for the years to come?

To be able to carry on, in this stormy ocean of life, without getting frustrated, depressed, lonely, isolated and empty, we need two lifeboats. One is an anchor, the other is a purpose. If we have both, it is ideal., but we need at least one of these, to lead a meaningful life.

Our anchoring usually comes from our family and friends. This too is not constant, as it changes from our childhood to teenage to adulthood to old age. From parents, to peers, to spouse/partner to children and contemproraries, this anchor is shifting in the sands of time. In fact, if we dont shift our anchor, it becomes a problem, since the sand is not always firm.

As we grow older, we tend to dislodge our anchor from our parents and friends, and re-anchor ourselves to our partners or children. Man is a social animal, and it is very difficult for us to remain anchorless in life. If that happens, we tend to drift aimlessly, tossing and turning with every wave the ocean of life brings.

Our anchor may be anyone—it does not matter. But if we have a strong anchor, half our battle is won, and there will always be something/ someone to go back to, in life. In every crisis, we always have our anchor to fall back upon, to lift our spirits and to bring us back to balance.

The other arm of our support system, is purpose. If we have a strong anchor and a solid purpose, we are lucky, since these two entities help to hold us strainght, give us support and balance, and prevent us from sinking, when we are faced with undesirable circumstances. But even if one of them is there, it will prevent us from drifting/ drowing in the ocean of life.

As far as purpose is concerned, it is said that every soul here takes birth with a purpose. Many of us might never find our true purpose, and might be forced to come back again and again till we do. But for someone who has found a higher purpose, life becomes easier and more meaningful.

Your purpose could be just about anything–anything that makes your passionate and committed. Your job, your family, your child, your community, a social issue, your country–anything could be part of your purpose. And your purpose will be much beyond earning money and managing your daily needs. It will be always about giving, about service to others.

If your life is seeming frustrating, dull, boring, meaningless, empty, lonely, depressive—–look at your life to see whether you have an anchor and/or a purpose. If both are lacking, you know why you are in this state. Even if you find one of these, you will be able to pull yourself out of your apathetic state, and get productive, happy and eventually find your balance.

And how does one find his/her purpose? Focus on those things where you feel involved, where time seems to stop, and where you get tremendous happiness, in doing something for yourself and especially others. True happiness and fulfillment comes from making a difference in someone else’s life….and this automatically translates into happiness, joy, peace and balance….for you.

If you cannot find and anchor and cannot find a purpose in life, it is very likely that you will seek an escape–in any form. And whatever form of escape you choose, unless that is your purpose, you will not find peace or happiness. Every moment, ask yourself if you have good anchors and a good purpose. If your answer to either is yes, carry on. If it is a no, it is time to good deep within yourself, and find these quickly.
