Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hailed Supreme Court’s historic verdict
declaring the practice of instant divorce or triple talaq as illegal and unconstitutional.
“Judgment of the Hon’ble Supreme Court on triple talaq is historic. It grants equality to Muslim women and is a powerful measure for women empowerment,” PM Modi said.
In his Independence Day speech, PM Modi had praised Muslim women battling the practice of triple talaq and said the entire country supports them.
“I pay my respects to those women who had to lead miserable lives due to triple talaq and then started a movement which created an environment in the whole nation against the practice,” the prime minister had said.
BEGINNING OF NEW ERA: AMIT SHAH
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah also lauded the Supreme Court ruling on triple talaq and said said it was a victory for Muslim women and their right to live with dignity.
“I welcome this historical decision… This judgement is not about anyone’s victory or defeat. This is the victory of basic Constitutional rights of Muslim women and their right to live with equality,” Shah said.
Shah said that by declaring triple talaq as “unconstitutional”, the Supreme Court had given crores of Muslim women the right to live with self respect.
“It is the beginning of new era for the Muslim women to live with self respect and equality. The BJP welcomes the rights given to the Muslim women and sees it as a step forward towards a new India,” he said.
TRIPLE TALAQ ILLEGAL: SUPREME COURT
The Supreme Court by a majority verdict today set aside the practice of divorce through triple talaq among Muslims, saying the practice was void, illegal and unconstitutional.
The apex court held that the triple talaq was against the basic tenets of Quran.
“In view of the different opinions recorded by a majority of 3:2, the practice of ‘talaq-e-biddat’ (triple talaq) is set aside,” a five-judge constitution bench said in a 395-page order.
