Brother and me- a discussion

I came home in the evening and found brother sitting in my room, waiting for me.
.
ME: “What’s up bro ?”
.
BROTHER: “Where have you been all day? I have been waiting for you for quite sometime.”
.
ME: “I went to attend an interview. It didn’t go too well.”
.
BROTHER: “Ah !! Career, business. Nice, very nice !!!”
.
ME: “Why are you so sarcastic ? What’s wrong with a career ?”
.
BROTHER: “These days there can be no career without business. And the thing wrong with business is that you offer goods and services to only those who can pay for them. What about the poor or non-human creatures ? Would you offer your goods and services to a dog or a beggar on the streets ? Of course not !!!”
.
ME: “The poor are poor because they or their parents did not work/study when they had the chance. So, now they are paying for it. It’s all Karma, you see !!! And are animals even worth attending to ? Animals were born as animals for their past bad Karma.”
.
BROTHER: “Do you mean to say that a CEO works harder than a rickshaw-wala ? Braving all kinds of weather- be it a blazing hot day or a rainy morning, the rickshaw-wala appears to provide us his services.
I know he does it for money, but considering the amount of efforts he puts in, he should earn ten times the amount a CEO earns. Yet, in reality a rickshaw-wala earns peanuts compared to a CEO. So, where is this law of Karma you speak of ? If the law of Karma were real, the rickshaw-wala wouldn’t be earning the meager amount they earn. And as for attending to animals and providing them products and services- is it ethical to let the animals suffer in misery while people like you drive around in big cars ? The very incentive for each and every action should be to contribute in universal wellbeing for all, humans or otherwise. What have they been teaching you in schools ?”
.
ME: “But animals are not civilized.”
.
BROTHER: “Yes, indeed !!! Man is the most civilized of all because he alone pollutes land, water and air, poisons the planet and drives species after species into extinction. Where can you have a more civilized being ?”
.
ME: “But don’t we let animals live in our homes, our streets, our fields, our property ? They do nothing useful. Isn’t it more than enough ?”
.
BROTHER: “What do you mean by ‘our’ ? Look back into history. Man started as a hunter/gatherer. He has made this planet his own by dint of his superior intelligence and superior dexterity. Man forced animals to bow down before his superior strength and the property we own now is a product of force, not love. And then, man fought and still fights, with others of his kind, in order to forcibly convert the property of others into his own. So tell me, are we truly civilized ? “
.
“And yes, we are more gifted and powerful than any other organism in this planet. But, with great power comes great responsibility. We should use our gifts to spread light, joy and happiness, and help all creatures become better and live more meaningful lives, instead of spreading misery and darkness everywhere.”
.
ME: “You are right. Oh!! the cricket match has started already. Let me turn on the television.”
.
BROTHER: “There you go again, wandering down the wrong path. Tell me, what is achieved if India wins ? Will it bring food, clothes and shelter to the poor and starving ? Will it help the animals in the wild, suffering from thirst due to delayed monsoon ? Will it curb terrorism, corruption and wars ? You should know how to use which thing in what way. Cricket should be watched as a form of entertainment, something you watch to freshen your mind. Don’t turn watching cricket into a religion or the meaning of your life. It would not serve any purpose.”
.
I shook my head in agreement.
